The Development of the Pituitary

 

The developing pituitary has been manually defined in embryonic and fetal 3D models from CS11 to 21 pcw.

Rathke's pouch (light blue) is derived from the oral ectoderm and goes on to form the anterior lobe of the pituitary (adenohypohysis; blue). The posterior lobe (neurohypophysis; yellow) is derived from neural ectoderm.
